Spearfishing: Check marine park boundaries — Twelve Apostles Marine National Park lies east of Port Campbell and The Arches Marine Sanctuary is offshore south of Port Campbell, and spear guns are not permitted in any Victorian marine protected area (Parks Victoria, checked 4 Nov 2026). Open coast spearfishing requires flat swell, experienced buddies, and current VFA maps.

Peterborough and the wider Port Campbell coastline offer open Bass Strait diving — a step change from bay sites. When swell is down, reef and sand produce excellent fish and invertebrate life. When swell is up, entries become dangerous quickly.
The experience
Reef platforms and gutters run 5–18 m depending on line. Visibility on good days can exceed bay standards — 10–20 m is possible in winter with calm weather. Surge and swell are the limiting factors, not depth.
Freediving: Advanced shore freediving and spearfishing when legal — strong entries/exits, rip awareness, and buddy rescue skills mandatory. See shallow water blackout prevention.
Scuba: Boat and shore dives when clubs declare conditions safe. Current along reef can sweep divers — plan drift and pickup.
When not to dive
If surf reports show swell on the open coast, skip shore entries. Rips and dumpers at entries have injured divers who underestimated Bass Strait. This site earns its advanced rating honestly.
Marine parks
Two marine protected areas are on this coast: Twelve Apostles Marine National Park, east of Port Campbell, which is no-take apart from two fishing exclusion zones (areas excluded from the park, at Clifton Beach near Gibson Steps and at Princetown, each to 100 m seaward). Parks Victoria says these permit recreational fishing; that does not mean spearfishing is allowed, so check the VFA rules before spearing there. The other is The Arches Marine Sanctuary, offshore in about 20 m of water south of Port Campbell (both Parks Victoria, checked 4 Nov 2026). Spear guns are not permitted in any Victorian marine protected area (Parks Victoria). Boundaries are not visible from the water. Confirm pins on VicFishing before hunting.
Rating rationale (4.0 / 5)
World-class temperate reef on the right day — heavily weather-dependent. Not for beginners. Pair with Surf Coast notes in our regional guide.
