Spearfishing: Fishing is prohibited throughout Port Phillip Heads Marine National Park and spear guns are not permitted in any Victorian marine protected area (Parks Victoria, checked 4 Nov 2026). Only hunt outside the park, where current VFA maps show permitted waters, with a licence and within limits.

Queenscliff sits at Port Phillip Bay's narrow entrance — where Bass Strait meets the bay and tides create serious water movement. This is advanced diving: depth, current, traffic, and dense marine park zoning all demand respect.

The experience

Boat dives out of Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale reach 8–30 m structure, walls, and reef inside and outside the marine national park depending on the line. Pelagic species appear seasonally. Hunting is only legal outside the park boundaries. Visibility can be excellent compared to inner bay sites.

Scuba: Primary discipline for most divers here — air and nitrox charters operate from the Bellarine Peninsula when weather allows.

Freediving: Experienced hunters only — tidal planning, strong surface support, and depth skills non-negotiable. Not a training area.

Safety

  • Dive with clubs or skippers who know slack-water windows
  • Never fight tide at the heads without appropriate experience
  • Commercial shipping uses the shipping channel — stay clear

Zoning

The Port Phillip Heads Marine National Park wraps much of the high-value ground. The park has no zones that allow fishing: Parks Victoria states that fishing from the shore or at sea is prohibited in the park and that spear guns are not permitted within any of Victoria's marine protected areas (Parks Victoria, checked 4 Nov 2026). Outside the park, verify method and season in the current VFA guide, not social media.

Rating rationale (4.1 / 5)

World-class when conditions and zoning align — not accessible without boats and experience. Essential reference site for advanced Victorian divers planning Bay heads trips.
