The Rye foreshore — between Rosebud and Blairgowrie — offers straightforward bay diving over reef and sand. It is a training ground for Melbourne freedivers learning equalising, buddy protocol, and reef navigation before tackling Bass Strait headlands.

The experience

Walk-in entries over sand lead to 4–12 m reef fingers and weed lines. Life is typical Port Phillip temperate: snapper, flathead, squid, trevally, and small reef species. Summer visibility is often adequate for line diving; winter can surprise with clarity on cold days.

Snorkelling: Feasible in the first few metres on calm days — stay inside flagged swim areas where lifeguards operate and away from boat lanes.

Scuba: Shore refreshers and club training dives use Rye when conditions are calm.

Pier exclusion

Rye Pier attracts fish — and photographers — but spearfishing within 30 m of the pier is prohibited statewide. You can dive near the pier for observation; do not hunt inside the exclusion zone with spears.

Practical tips

  • Enter away from the main swimming beach on busy days
  • Morning sessions beat afternoon sea breeze chop
  • Pair with buddy system discipline every session

Rating rationale (4.0 / 5)

Reliable beginner-to-intermediate bay site with good species diversity in legal zones. Traffic and zoning prevent higher marks. For the exposed ocean back beaches at Blairgowrie, see Bridgewater Bay & Fowlers Beach on the other side of the Peninsula.
