Spearfishing: Verify each entry on VicFishing and spearfish only where maps show permitted waters; swell and rips add safety risk. Spear guns are not permitted in any Victorian marine protected area (Parks Victoria, checked 4 Nov 2026).

Cape Woolamai is Phillip Island's signature open-coast dive when conditions align. The cape catches Bass Strait swell — on flat days the reef and sand edges produce excellent hunting and observation; on typical swell days the entry is a hard no.
The dive
Rock and sand fall away to 4–16 m with kelp, reef, and sand gutters. Snapper and trevally move through in warmer months; winter sessions target different reef species in clearer but colder water. Visibility varies wildly with swell and runoff.
Freediving: Intermediate to advanced shore skills — know rips, time entries between sets, and use one-up-one-down with a surface marker on the float.
Scuba: Less common from shore than freediving but done by locals on calm windows.
Access
Parking near Woolamai surf beach fills in holiday season. Longer walks with kit are part of the deal. Plan exits before entries — drift along the cape can be faster than expected.
Zoning
Cape Woolamai is not in a marine national park, but there is a separate park nearby: Churchill Island Marine National Park sits in sheltered Western Port south of Rhyll, between Long Point on Phillip Island and North Point on Churchill Island (Parks Victoria, checked 4 Nov 2026). Spear guns are not permitted in any Victorian marine protected area. A legal entry point does not guarantee a legal dive line. Pin your intended reef on VicFishing.
Rating rationale (3.9 / 5)
Excellent temperate diving on calm days; inconsistent access and zoning homework limit repeatability. Essential Phillip Island option for experienced shore divers.
